Dakar Marathon Stage
Definition and Core Mechanism
The marathon stage is the most demanding format in the Dakar Rally; rather than a standalone stage, it comprises two consecutive Special Stages (SS). Between these two stages, competitors are completely cut off from their team support network, having to service their own machines and spend the night in a basic desert bivouac before tackling the following stage. The organisers' core objective behind the marathon stage is to narrow the competitive disparity stemming from resource gaps between well-funded factory outfits and independent privateers, putting both competitor and machine through an equal-footing two-day stress test.
No-Assistance Isolation Rules
During the marathon stage, team support crews are strictly barred from entering the marathon bivouac, leaving competitors with no access to technicians, mechanics, or any external technical assistance. Competitors must rely solely on the tools and spare parts carried on board to carry out repairs. While mutual assistance between competitors within the same category is permitted, cross-category assistance is strictly forbidden. For the bike category, this means riders must personally undertake servicing tasks such as chain replacement, air filter cleaning, and engine oil top-ups after completing hundreds of kilometres of high-speed riding, where any major mechanical failure could spell an immediate retirement.
Service Time Limits and Tyre Control
Strict time limits apply within the designated service area. RallyGP riders are granted just 30 minutes of service time, whereas Rally2 riders receive 60 minutes. If this is exceeded, a 30-minute extension can be taken with a 1-hour time penalty, after which competitors are required to vacate the area. Tyre management is another critical constraint of the marathon stage: changing tyres or wheel rims is strictly prohibited throughout the entire marathon, and swapping wheels between competitors is likewise not allowed. Consequently, competitors must tackle over a thousand kilometres across desert terrain, gravel, and dunes over two days on a single set of tyres, making tyre preservation strategy a decisive factor in race outcomes.
Format Evolution in the 2026 Season
Held in Saudi Arabia, the 2026 Dakar Rally features two marathon stages. Organisers have introduced the "Bivouac Refuge" hybrid format, merging classic marathon rules with the "48h Chrono" concept: when spending the night at the marathon bivouac, competitors are provided solely with a mattress, sleeping bag, tent, and a single food ration, with no camp infrastructure. T5.2 assistance trucks are allowed into the bivouac to assist competitors, and servicing is no longer restricted by time limits—an adjustment that eases the extreme burden on bike category riders tasked with maintaining their machines single-handedly.
